On this May Bank Holiday weekend, exactly 32 years ago, London was abuzz with jungle events as the musical genre was rapidly emerging from the underground. Event organisers were vying to reach rave-goers, and their best chance was to advertise on London’s jungle pirate stations.

I have previously written about the pirate tapes that Matthew Wharmby copied for me in 1996. These tapes introduced me to jungle history prior to 1995 – the year when I had moved to London. This Kool FM tape, recorded by Matthew on 28th May 1994, was part of this collection. Reflecting the scale of jungle’s explosion, the adverts occupy 37 minutes of this 47-minute one-sided tape recording. At the 37 minute mark, DJ Kane and MC G start their set.

MC G: Yes, London, back after the ad break. Sounds of the DJ Kane, time to come with it Kane, sounds of the Kool FM stepping in y’all. Straight from the top, first one from the Kane. Come with it DJ. […]

To all those who reached to the Roller Express yesterday. Harder They Come, Few Dollars More – absolutely wicked.

“The Harder They Come, A Few Dollars More” event mentioned by MC G is the very first advert on this recording (studio tapes with ads were prepared ahead of each weekend’s broadcast, so you could still hear past events being announced). You can listen to the recording below, and browse the flyers and other information I found online for each of the adverts.

It’s a nice trip back in time on another sunny and rather hot Bank Holiday weekend.

Over the past few weeks, I have managed to revive a few of my old hard disks, some of which I hadn’t used in over 15 years. I did this to recover my old MP3 collection, after quitting all major music streaming platforms. While going through the files, I stumbled upon a series of Speed tribute mixes by Lee Mascall, a DJ who also went by the lennylightweight handle on Discogs. I originally downloaded all seven of them from the lightweightindustries.co.uk website, which went offline around 2009. Below, I am sharing my favourite one from the series, Volume 5, along with the tracklist that was stored in the MP3 metadata portion of the file.

Tap here to expand Lee Mascall’s bio

Born in 1977 (a week after Elvis passed on), had no real choice in early music taste due to my older brother directing me away from Huey Lewis and the News (first 12″) towards East Coast Hip Hop (Cold Chillin’), UK Hip Hop (Overlord X, Hijack, Blade), Hip House (Tony Scott, Fast Eddie), Breakbeat House (SUAD, Vinyl Solution, Kickin’, Warriors Dance, Blapps!). I must have started playing vinyl at about 13 when we bought some belt drives off a local Hip Hop producer as he was getting Technics. Within a year or so we luckily got a whole Technics set up for Xmas (thanks mum & dad!).

From there I would just steal my brothers records and buy the odd piece now and again, as I got more part time jobs I would buy more vinyl until I eventually started my first job working a stones throw from Rob Haigh’s (Omni Trio) Parliament Records in Hertford. I only ever listened to the breakbeat based stuff from 91-97, 4/4 was not even on my radar, not enough meat in the music for me.

At about the same time a DJ friend started up Stronghold Records to produce some ex Shadow artists, along with his own projects so that meant free entry to the nights that were going on in London, Thursday was Speed @ Mars Bar, Soho. Friday was Innovation @ Paradise, Islington. Sunday was Metalheadz @ Blue Note, Hoxton. The odd Saturday Playford would throw a Moving Shadow party in Equinox but that was full of tourists.

The golden period of electronic music for me was 94-96 with artists like Source Direct, Photek, Hidden Agenda, Aquasky, Intense, Q-Project etc would produce absolute jaw dropping tunes, the creativity around this time was just amazing, down at Speed it was thrilling to hear all these new sounds but knowing it would be 3-6 months before it would get pressed just used to make it even more sweeter when it finally went on my pile in Parliament.
